During Your Consultation
During your otoplasty consultation, Dr. Davis will assess your concerns and examine your ears. Depending on how much you ears stick out and the size of your ears, he will describe which techniques are needed to give you the result that you want.
Technique
During your ear pinning procedure, Dr. Davis will reduce how much you ears stick out by making an incision hidden on the back of the ear and both "pin" the ear back against you head as well as shape the cartilage. Sometimes an incision is needed on the front of the ear hidden in the "bowl" of your ear to reduce the excess cartilage. The surgery takes around 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Recovery
After your ear pinning surgery, you will have a head wrap on, and you will return to the office the next day to have the head wrap removed. We will continue to check on you as you recover and are of course here and available any day if you have any questions or concerns. You will need to tuck the top of your ears into a headband or beanie cap full-time for the first 2 weeks and then at night for another 2 weeks. This is to protect your ears from accidently being pulled away from your head. That first week you'll be a bit bruised and swollen but will be feeling very good at the end of the week. You can begin strenuous exercise and rigorous activity at 8 weeks.

Q&A with Dr. Davis
Ear surgery is usually performed with only local anesthesia, but general anesthesia may be needed in some cases.
It's very easy to recover from eyelid surgery. Most patients only need a cool compress on the eyes and Tylenol for comfort. You will use some eye drops for about a week to keep your eyes from getting dry. Bruising around the eyes is very normal and is easily concealed with makeup at about 2 weeks.
This answer is a little technical, but prominent ears are from a combination of an enlarged conchal bowl "the bowl by the ear canal" and lack of the "anti-helical fold," the crease of cartilage along the rim of the ear. The surgery corrects each of these by reducing the size of prominent of the bowl and creation of the upper ear fold.
As soon as a kid starts to have awareness of his or her ears and begins to either be teased or become self-conscious, this is the time to have the surgery. This will allow for his or her ears to not negatively affect social development. And if it's something that bothers you later in life, you're never to old to have the surgery if it's something that you want to do!
