More about Breast Implant Removal

During Your Consultation

During your breast implant removal consultation, Dr. Davis will assess the shape, volume, and symmetry of both breasts and take measurements. You will have an opportunity to share your experience with your implants and your reasons for wanting them removed and discuss your goals and ideal result. You can also share and specific concerns and have all of your questions answered.

Technique

Because there are various reasons women choose to have their implants removed, there are various surgical techniques Dr. Davis uses to give each patient the best result. In some instances, it is as simple as making a small incision using the excising scar and taking the implants out. Other situations require a more extensive procedure to remove the scar tissue, or capsule, around the implants and performing a concurrent lift. The surgery can take from 1 to 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting has made such a great difference in the results for patients who chose to have their implants removed. At the time of the implant removal, liposuction can be performed, and the fat then transferred to the breasts to add volume.

Breast Implant Illness (BII)

Breast Implant Illness is a condition where patients attribute feeling sick to their breast implants. There is a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, aches and pains, hair loss, sleep disruption, rashes and skin changes, headaches, and GI changes. No specific test currently exists to directly prove the correlation, but Dr. Davis has treated many women who feel much better after having their implants removed. For the patients who have medical problems attributed to their implants, Dr. Davis removes the implants and the capsules.

Recovery

After surgery you will be placed in a supportive bra and will return to the office the next day for us to check on you. We will continue to check on you as you recover and are of course here and available any day if you have any questions or concerns. If you had your capsules removed as well as your implants, you will have a drain on each side. If fat grafting was also performed, you will have a compression garment on the areas that liposuction was performed. You'll feel sore for a few days but should feel good within a week. Change in nipple sensitivity after surgery is common and often returns to normal in a few months. After the first week, you can gradually increase your activity level, and strenuous exercise can resume at 6 weeks.
